Rodger Montaño, Signature

Signature continues to shine as one of the best (and most beautiful) restaurants in San Antonio, and though there’s been a change in who’s running the kitchen, the bar program remains firmly in the hands of Rodger Montaño.

The former semi-pro baseball player and native San Antonian participated in the last two Kinsman Brandy Alexander Tours and continues to put together imaginative takes on the classic dessert cocktail. Last year he floated Moscato on top of his Nutty Alexander, which is probably the first time in history wine has been used in a Brandy Alexander.

I was hoping he would continue down that road and try something with red wine this time around since he’s a big fan of Italian reds, but that didn't happen. I’ll put a bug in his ear for next year…or not. Probably best to just leave him alone since he seems to be doing fine without my input…if you could imagine.

This year he channels his 2020 cocktail, the Coco Alexander, by returning to a lactose-free take on the classic dessert cocktail. Almond milk is used in lieu of cream and lends a slight nutty flavor to the cocktail, but the star of this sweet sipper is the butterscotch. Can you really go wrong with 1 ounce of that buttery, brown sugar goodness? No ma’am…

And that buttery, brown sugar goodness only tastes better when paired with Kinsman (like everything else in the world), but it truly shines when combined with allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg. That shit tastes like Christmas in a cup and had me longing for days of Christmas past. Bout to put up a Christmas tree and everything. Let’s go Mariah!

So if you too fancy a little holiday nostalgia and require additional motivation to get into the holiday spirit, or just want a delicious cocktail, pay a visit to Rodger at Signature now through NYE and enjoy his take on the classic Brandy Alexander.

Home Sweet Home.
